However, recent events within our industry and in our society have prompted learning and unlearning that have redefined what it means to have a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture.
BILD’s People and Culture Committee began by developing a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) Statement, which expresses our Association’s commitment to ensuring that our industry reflects the diversity of the communities in which we build, work and live.
The statement also outlines our commitment to a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of racism or discrimination. To supplement the statement, we produced a resource guide for BILD’s member companies so that they can create their own zero-tolerance policies.
We then invited the leaders of member companies to review the DE&I Statement and sign a Leader’s Pledge committing to take concrete action in promoting the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of their business.
The positive response and commitment continue to build each day, and you can see the companies that have signed the pledge on the BILD website, at https://bildgta.ca/whoweare/dei/deipledge.
The BILD DE&I Statement and Leader’s Pledge, formally launched at BILD’s annual general meeting earlier this month, are just the beginning. This effort requires unwavering commitment, and we have a long way to go, which is why we have prepared a multi-year plan to guide us.
One of our next steps is a benchmarking survey on the effectiveness of DE&I policies and programs in BILD member companies. We will conduct follow-up surveys regularly to measure progress and to help us understand what is working well.
